Davis Officially Named Assistant Football Coach

March 27th, 2008 · No Comments

FROM OREGON STATE UNIVERSITY
ATHLETICS COMMUNICATIONS OFFICE

March 27, 2008

davis-reggie-mug-rb-coach-unlv.jpgCorvallis – Reggie Davis has been named assistant football coach at Oregon State University, Beaver head coach Mike Riley announced Thursday. He will coach the running backs while current Assistant Head Coach Jay Locey will take over wide receiver coaching duties.

Davis coached the running backs at UNLV the last three years after spending the 2004 season as the tight ends and assistant special teams coach at the University of San Diego.

“I have known Reggie for many years and he is a person of great character,” Riley said. “He is a terrific addition to our coaching staff and I look forward to working with him.”

Davis played tight end and on special teams in two full seasons (1999 & 2000) for Riley when he was the head coach of the San Diego Chargers. Davis began his post-playing career as a speed and strength coach for four years, training professional, college and high school athletes in weightlifting and running techniques.

“I’m very excited and consider it a pleasure to join Coach Riley’s staff,” Davis said. “I have a lot of respect for him as a man and as a coach.”

Davis, from Long Beach, Calif., is a 1998 graduate of the University of Washington with a degree is sociology. While at UW he lettered four seasons at tight end, was one of four team captains as a senior and helped the program to four bowl games.

“This is a terrific opportunity for me to coach in a conference that I played in,” Davis added. “I think Oregon State and Corvallis will be a very nice fit for me professionally and for my family.”

Reggie and his wife Jennifer have five children, including two sets of twins.

Davis joins former Beaver player Keith Heyward as the new assistant coaches for the 2008 season. Heyward, who was on Riley’s staff in 2005 and 2006 as a graduate assistant, serves as the cornerbacks coach.

The Beavers open spring drills March 31. The annual spring game is May 3 at Reser Stadium and OSU Athletics is proud to announce “FeverFest” in conjunction with the scrimmage (more details shortly).

Sports Illustrated Opens Their Vault: OSU On The Cover

March 22nd, 2008 · 3 Comments

Jay from One Click Sports News, here.

0305_large.jpgThis past Thursday, Sports Illustrated opened the vault on all of their content.

Explore the 54 years of Sports Illustrated history including over 150000 stories, 2800 covers, 500000 photographs, a Wiki sports encyclopedia and links to

Covers. Articles. Ads. Everything.

That got me to thinking: how many times has Oregon State University been represented on the cover of Sports Illustrated? The answer? Five. And that’s better than the Ducks.

I knew how the Beavers stacked up against the Ducks, but I was also curious as to how they stack up against the rest of the Pac-10. Pretty well. But, as you will see, USC and UCLA are in a league of their own.

This is not an exhaustive list (because of USC and UCLA). And the cover count only represents the instances where a school is the primary focus on the cover. For example, USC’s Todd Marinovich made the cover throwing against Stanford. But Stanford really isn’t the focus (Actually, they’re kind of oblique and out of focus.). So, that doesn’t count. And SI.com’s search feature is OK, but sometimes returns inconsistent results.

Here are the Pac-10 covers of Sports Illustrated.

Sports Illustrated Covers: OREGON STATE - 6

Cover Dates: 10.16.61, 01.07.63, 03.05.90, 03.23.81, 09.29.03

UPDATE: A few BSN visitors have noted that there is a sixth SI cover featuring Chad Johnson from the 2000 Civil War.  Unfortunately, SI’s Vault does not have that listed anywhere. And it does not come up in a Google Image search either.

Sports Illustrated Covers: WASHINGTON - 3

Cover Dates: 10.03.60, 10.04.71

Thanks to Alex, there is one more from 11.24.06 that did not come up in SI’s search feature.

112406_large.jpg

Sports Illustrated Covers: WASHINGTON STATE - 0

Washington State joins Arizona State as the only Pac-10 schools not to have a Sports Illustrated cover. Although, I think there is a WSU player (Cowgill?) on the cover of the 2008 NCAA Tournament Preview edition.

Sports Illustrated Covers: CAL - 2

Cover Dates: 11.24.75, 03.29.93

1124_large.jpg 0329_large.jpg

Sports Illustrated Covers: STANFORD - 5

Cover Dates: 11.08.02, 03.17.97, 11.23.98, 10.07.02, 03.29.04

Sports Illustrated Covers: ARIZONA - 4

0402_large.jpg 1125_large.jpg

Sports Illustrated Covers: ARIZONA STATE - 0

Like Washington State, Arizona State does not have a Sports Illustrated cover to its name. Unlike Washington State, though, I don’t even think they have a player on the cover of the 2008 NCAATournament Preview edition.

Sports Illustrated Covers: USC - 31

Cover Dates: Too many. First: 11.26.56 Most Recent: 11.19.07

Lee Hull Leaves Oregon State Football Program

March 5th, 2008 · No Comments

OSU Athletic Department Media Services
March 5, 2008

Corvallis – Oregon State University head football coach Mike Riley has announced that receivers coach Lee Hull has left the program to accept a similar position at a Football Bowl Subdivision program in an east coast Bowl Championship Series conference.

The 42-year-old from Millville, N.J., came to OSU from Holy Cross prior to the 2003 season. He coached several positions for the Crusaders from 1996-2002 after spending five years with high school programs in Massachusetts.

“I’ve resigned solely for family reasons,” Hull said. “I have loved every minute at Oregon State. I appreciate everything Coach Riley and Oregon State has done for me. Coach Riley took a chance bringing me on staff from a Division I-AA program to a Pac-10 school. I owe a lot of my success and growth to him.”

Hull began his career with the Beavers as the running backs coach for two seasons and helped current NFL All-Pro Steven Jackson earn All-American honors. He switched to receivers coach in 2005 and since coached All-Americans Mike Hass and Sammie Stroughter.

“Coach Hull did a terrific job and made a big impact for the Beavers,” Riley said. “I certainly wish him well with his new opportunity. I completely understand his family’s wishes to be closer to home.”

Hull played professionally for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League from 1990-92, where he first became acquainted with Riley, who was the head coach during his rookie season.

Riley indicated he will fill the open position in the near future. Earlier this year, cornerbacks coach Nigel Burton resigned to become the defensive coordinator at Nevada. He was replaced by former four-year Beaver letterwinner Keith Heyward, who spent one year as an assistant at Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo.

Oregon State opens spring drills March 31 for the much anticipated 2008 season. The Spring Game will be held May 3 at Reser Stadium.
